The mountain bike is definitely the best type of bike for Polish roads. It allows you to overcome tens of kilometers without any emotions.
In addition, a mountain bike often provides the perfect compromise on the position of the bike between comfort and sporting, fast figure. One of the undoubted advantages is the versatility of this bike. You can also easily cover the bumpy mountain trails and equally level asphalt roads, so rare in the country on the Vistula River. All these features show why a mountain bike is better than other types of bikes.
When was the mountain bike created?
The prototype of MTB bikes is the Schwinn Excelsior, founded in 1933, characterized by a rugged, durable construction and thick tires. It was a bike used for the toughest tasks, carrying heavy packages, driving in difficult terrain. Despite this, the name "mountain bike" appeared in dictionaries only after almost 50 years from the production of the first model Excelsior.
The '70s is the beginning of the history of the mountain bike known today. It all started with the ban on riding a motorcycle on a hill in the United States. Then they decided to improve the already existing Excelsior construction. Then, in 1979, they began to produce "mature" mountain bikes. Who would have thought that in less than 40 years they would become so popular?
How to choose a mountain bike?
An investment in a mountain bike often exceeds several thousand zlotys. Therefore, the choice should be carefully considered, look at various parameters and then make the right decision. Below are tips to follow when choosing the one best suited to the cyclist. Thanks to them, the question "how to choose a mountain bike" will not be a problem anymore.
Mountain bike male or mountain bike for women ?
The question can be said basic. Men's and women's bikes vary in geometry, saddles and several other parameters. It is also the simplest and first decision on the way to buy your dream mountain bike.
Mountain bike - what frame?
Another important issue. Frame type and geometry have a significant impact on the purpose of the bicycle. People practicing downhill cycling need aggressive angles, a large stroke of shock absorbers and a low-mounted saddle. The most universal ones, i.e those used in XC, have the right geometry and a low pitch allowing for riding both on the street and in the mountains. They are therefore the most common on the roads. Slightly more advanced constructions also have a rear axle, which also slightly reduces the efficiency of pedaling, but makes driving in the field more convenient.
How to choose a mountain bike for growth?
The question of growth is directly related to the frame, or more specifically its size. More specifically, it does not depend on height, but on the length of the leg. It is measured from the crotch to the ground. It often happens that a person with a height of 170 cm may have a longer leg than a person with a height of 180 cm. In addition, women statistically have legs longer than men. The next issue, which is also important, and will be discussed later is the size of the wheels. Below are two rules depending on the size of the wheel:
- Wheel size 26 and 27.5: the leg length should be multiplied by 0.57 and obtained in centimeters or by 0.226 to obtain the size in inches.
- Wheel size 29: The length of the leg should be multiplied by 0.6 to get the result in centimeters or by 0.238 to get the size in inches.
Of course, it's not possible that you can not have a frame that is too big or too small. It is often found even among professional athletes, who can help in achieving a better result. However, without much experience, it is best to choose size-matched products.
In addition, one more problem is the "Sizes" type S, M, L, etc. Then all conversion factors do not help. The best solution is to check the so-called the size table of the producer. Then you have almost a hundred percent confidence in choosing the right bike.
Mountain bike - what size of wheels?
Now the aforementioned issue. Currently, in MTB, basically three sizes are used in inches: 26, 27.5 and 29 inches. Once, only the first one was used. Later the revolution was introduced by the largest circles. Currently, the indirect size, having the advantages of both solutions, is growing in popularity. Below are their features:
Wheels 26 inches :
- Can be used by even very low people
- Lower weight
- Higher dynamics (breaks)
Wheels 29 inches :
- Higher speed at descents
- Higher speed on climbs
- Easier overcoming holes and potholes
Mountain bike - what brand?
Virtually every bike manufacturer has mountain models in its offer. Which one has the best quality products? It's always worth checking the quality of components. However, it should be noted that sometimes manufacturers use a higher class of brakes and derailleurs while mounting a slightly weaker shock absorber and vice versa. This is to perfectly fit the needs and expectations of the consumer. So the answer to the question of which mountain bike to 1000, 1500 ... 4000 dollars and more should be very individual.
Mountain bike exploitation
When a mountain bike is already chosen, which one should be purchased, it is worth to learn some rules that allow to keep it in good condition, always ready for driving.
How do you clean a mountain bike?
It should be paradoxical to start with how not to clean it. Many people use pressure washers that brutally damage bearings and gaskets. It is simply a bike murder without any appearances. The bike, even the muddy one, is best washed with warm water and a sponge. Rarely do you need detergents.
Mountain bike - how much air in the tires?
The question should be for most people how much air in the tubes, because tubeless tires are still very rare technology. Going to the heart of the matter, the tire should be primarily pumped according to the criteria given by the manufacturer. It is best to aim more or less in the middle of the range, i.e. mostly around 3 atmospheres. The maximum pressure is used very rarely only when driving on asphalt, because it is easily damaged. On the other hand, the minimum is also rarely used due to the very high rolling resistance.
Lubricate or lubricate?
Almost everyone knows an elderly gentleman who has the same bike for 40 years with a few kilos of grease on the chain. This is not a good solution today, especially when it comes to mountain bikes. Dust particles, grains of sand adhere to typical lubricants, which damage the driving elements of the bicycle.
How to improve a mountain bike?
Is it possible to improve the bicycle's performance? What is the first to change when changing it? XC bicycles, or traditional "highlanders" rarely require a perfectly working shock absorber, and you need a perfect drive and good brakes. That's why it's best to focus on improving the bike's parameters. However, when typical downhill constructions are modified, it is worth focusing on better amortization at the expense of the drive. It increases the security and allows you to improve the times of descents.
